The JJ ECC83-S tube has several improvements in its construction from the old ECC83 version.

From our review of this tube: "This tube sports a different plate design than found in most 12AX7's. When you look at them you can't help but think that they must be rugged and good for the musician on the road. The compact plate structure does nothing to dampen their sound or dynamic response. I find them to be well balanced. While not as harmonically rich as others I tested, they do provide high gain without the usual noise and microphonic problems you would expect. This is great sound for your dollar. If you're using a combo amp and find the Philips a little rich sounding, the JJ ECC83 / 12AX7 may be your solution."

agree with the less harmonic content

by

Just got some JJ tubes today. Used them in all three preamp stages in my jca2212c amp. They lost all harmonic content compared to the stock 12ax7-b that are in the amp. The upside is all harshness in the highs and lows was gone. Maybe not the greatest tube for modern high gain. I could see it having some good uses.

Great tube stock in classic 30 ii

by

Bought my peavey classic 30 ii new in 2014 and it came stock with jj's. Very warm sounding and gives a classic rock amp a great metal sound. The clean channel is very thick, full, bassy bottom end as with the gain channel. Great tube and I recommend it to any amp owner. My classic 30 will always have jj's in it.

Too dark

Replaced the Sovtek preamp tubes in my Peavey Classic 30 with JJ ECC83S tubes. Harmonics are gone and sounds like I put a blanket over the amp. Ended up with Electro Harmonix tubes and they brought the amp to life.

For Hi Fi

Excellent replacement for high end audio preamp. Replaced Electro Harmonix with them. Much better clarity and brilliance.

to muddy

I never wanted to buy JJ tubes but I gave them a try. Wanted to replace some Tung-Sols in my Powerball II. I don't like them at all, maybe they suit another amp better.
