This new production 12AX7 / ECC83 preamp tube is New Sensor's reissue of the famous Mullard 12AX7.

From our review: "Microphonics is not an issue despite the larger that average plate structure. The transconductance on my sample was the same as two NOS samples I measured. Not really high gain at all, but a real good noise floor and a nice smooth tone that doesn’t encourage ear fatigue the way some preamps can be."

The Mullard name and trademark have been acquired by the New Sensor Corporation. This new production Mullard 12AX7 vacuum tube is manufactured at their Xpo-Pul factory (also known as Reflektor) in Saratov, Russia. New Sensor is an American corporation and since taking ownership of this factory has been steadily improving the quality of current production tubes.

One other note about the construction of these tubes is they have filaments that are almost completely encased in the plate structure. They often don't "light up" when working properly. This is not a problem, it's normal for the reissue Mullard 12AX7 / ECC83.

Purchased this 12ax7 tube for my audio system. I was looking to put a bit of zing in it as it had become a bit too dull with the new components. At first, this tube sounded terrible. So I let it run for a bit, say a couple of days of listening to music, and the sound was just horrible. There was not redeeming quality at all. I guess it was not a good match for my system. It was quickly removed and I put the old JJ tube back in and all was better. I guess not all tubes are created equal. I much prefer the JJ and EH offerings. I will also be trying the Tung-Sol and Gold Lion tubes going forward. * I am going to give the tubes 2.5 stars as a friend of mine is now using the tubes and he said he likes them. So I will split the difference.

Impressed me in a good way.

I compared this against Tung Sol, Preferred Series, JJs and Mesa Boogie in V1 in a Mark V. I use an american PRS Tremonti. I didn't expect this to be my favorite tube for V1. Clean is very clear, fuller than the Preferred Series (although similar). The high gain channels are less harsh but still with loads of gain. If I use it on the High Gain tube positions the amp does lose detail. I mix with Mesa and Tung Sol for High Gain Channels.

Great tube! Just need to find its right spot

Mid gain, Flat EQ, very low noise. Balanced sound. A little on the weak side for V1 and hard rock, but very good in V2 and V3 to remove the harshness and over-brightness of high gain amps.

Impressive Sound

I bought three of these and a pair of Mullard EL34's when I noticed that the 100 Metro Amps Plexi clones were using them. These are great sounding tubes in a Non-master volume Marshall amp, in all my experience with them. To be honest I don't really like how the New Sensor Preamp tubes are made - the glass bottles are too large and the internals are strange and Russian looking - but these do sound very very good in a Marshall.

This works well in conjunction with other preamp brands

I have the Mullard on V1 and Tungsol 12AX7 on V2 made my amp's gain stage sound very pleasing and less ear fatigue.. It balanced out the inherent shrill of the Tung-Sol with the warmer and 3D tonal characteristic of the Mullard.
