JJ GZ34 / 5AR4 | Best I could find.

Regardless of cost, this JJ-5AR4 is the best sounding rectifier tube I have found. And I tried many over the years. Being used in a KT88 push-pull stereo tube amplifier.

JJ GZ34 / 5AR4 | The Most Musical Current Production GZ34; Just Replace It On A Schedule

by

Given how affordable these JJ-5AR4 are, I just keep some on hand and replace them every 6-9 months. Not that I've had a problem, but as online comments show, some people have and a few I know personally. The reason I accept preventative replacement is that the GZ34 gives many amps requiring it a tight-sphincter sound that detracts from musicality. This JJ is easily the most elastic-sounding of the current production GZ34s. I use it in both guitar and hifi amps, where even a NOS Mullard sounds too Calvinist.

I have some hifi amps that are spec'd for GZ34 but have sufficiently relaxed B+ voltages to allow use of other rectifier types, where often a NOS 5V4 sounds exceedingly natural and musical. In those amps, if I run a JJ GZ34, the sound is more in the direction of the more elastic 5V4 than any other new production GZ.

At just 18 bucks you can cash in soda cans and whiskey bottles to keep yourself in rectifiers.

JJ GZ34 / 5AR4 | Not recommended GZ34

Waste of money. Bought two JJ-5AR4 for my Dynaco ST70 and gone less than a month.

JJ GZ34 / 5AR4 | Long lasting tube that performs very well.

by

The first one of these JJ-5AR4 I installed was clear back in April 2012. I keep a record of most repairs I do on the Dynaco. It lasted, I estimate, about 8000 hours. When I got this one I also got a spare. That spare is just fine to this day in December 2018. Long lasting tube that performs very well.

JJ GZ34 / 5AR4 | They Do What I Want

by

I have two 2001 Vox AC30/6-TBX amps: Brian May style. Brian uses the Normal channel exclusively but I also like the '60's jangle of the Brilliant channel. So, there have been tone stack mods done & filter cap values increased to where the dimed amps can withstand +35 dB gain from the May Treble booster. Rectifier - Sovtek. BM Tube life Power Stage – 30 hours max.

For all other styles of music, utilizing Brilliant (NOS tone stack parts) & Normal channels, I use the JJ-5AR4's. They lend a little more compression and add sweetness to the tone. They bloom beautifully! I have been using them for about 15 years and I've never had a failure. I'm so satisfied with them that I haven't entertained the idea of using anything else. In fact, out of a compliment of 11 tubes, 9 are JJ’s.

It depends upon usage, but on average I get a minimum of two years out of these rectifiers.

I'm happy!
