Either a total hit or a miss, you have to try

Well, my Primaluna Dialogue Premium sounded very good out of the box. Of course I wanted to tube roll.
I ordered 6 of these to replace the OE modern- made input and pre-stage tubes and found the amp sounding clinical… and me scratching my head. I had researched every tube that I could afford at the time and bought six of them. So, I just replaced the two input stage tubes and leave the other 4 pre tubes OE. Wow; this is the magic! That’s a fabulous combination and you maybe never need to change any other tubes on your Primaluna. This combination seems to have all the strengths of a tube amp and none of the weaknesses. Sad now in 2021 the rest of the OE Chinese made Primaluna tubes are suddenly hard to get!

My McIntosh MC225 now sounds wonderful

When I acquired my McIntosh MC225, the tubes that came with it were near end of life. I wrote an email to thetubestore.com looking for recommendations for a new set of tubes for the MC225. I received an email back that recommended :

Preferred Series 7025/12AX7,
JAN Philips ECG 5814A/12AU7,
Electro-Harmonix 12BH7,
Tung-Sol 7591A.

I ordered the tubes in the correct quantity. For the first 25-50 hours on the new tubes my MC225 sounded harsh. Then it got that sweet tube sound and I found out how incredibly wonderful a McIntosh MC225 sounds. I have recently ordered a spare set.

Nice little tube, running with the two JAN-Philips 12at7wc. Sweet together, nice team. Was running JJs. These guys are sweet music, JJs are my spares.

Solid tube with great sound

by

I use this tube in a DIY 4S Universal preamp. This preamp can use many of the different 12 volt nine pin tubes, such as 12AX7, 12BH7, 12AT7 etc. In my application, it is my second favourite after GE 12AU7 clear tops. It is a very clean sounding tube that doesn't color the sound, and it is very resistant to microphonics. I would describe it as being honest to the source material. The clear tops are great, but I suspect it is for what they add to the music that isn't actually there originally. So clean and not euphoric is how I would describe them. In a good way.

I agree with Anlog Dog. After 200 hours burning in the sound remained too hard. Like listening to a solid tate amp instead of a tube amp.
