I cannot recommend these.

I bought two of these to replace the stock 5AR4 that came with my Prima Luna D100 pre-amp. Very disappointing. Total lack of clarity and definition with poor separation between instruments. This was not money well spent but you don't know if you don't try. I am back to the stock tubes.

First Impressions - Tung-Sol5AR4

by

This tube has been in use about a week. It replaced a Sovtek 5AR4 that came with the ModWright 9.0 power supply. The player is a Sony XA5400ES with ModWright Ultimate Truth mods.

It is a definite though subtle improvement. Well worth the cost. It has a curious effect of making every CD sound like a new improved version like the Paul Simon reissue of Rhythm of the Saints. On an instrumental, when there is a solo, the musician appears to step ahead, do the solo, then step back. There is a bit more clarity most noticeable in the midrange. The bass also seems to be slightly more powerful.

The tube needs about 100 hours of break in.
