The Preferred Series 7025 is a high quality 12AX7 tube type. This tube is a reproduction of the highly regarded and sought after Mullards from the 1960s.

This 7025 is a high quality and very rugged custom 12AX7 tube produced for us in China by the Shuguang factory. The plates are manufactured out of a premium metal imported from Germany and supported with extra thick mica spacers to insure against microphonics. They are burned in and tested at the factory and then again on our digital high voltage equipment to make sure the tubes selected for you will provide outstanding tone and performance.

From our review: "A great sounding 12AX7 tube type that reminds me a little more of the ECC83 that Ei made in the old days. That's a pretty nice compliment. I compared this tube against an old Ei and Telefunken smooth plate and there was very little difference. Lots of gain with a rather low noise floor. No microphonics issues at all. Very good considering the large plate size. Spot welding may be better for microphonics than crimped plates. I tried it in all the standard guitar amp duties and it was fine. Fabulous in Blackface Fender amps. We tried this 7025 in a 66 Vibrolux reverb 2x10 combo and the tones were all there. Light and shimmering or really aggressive, it's all good."

Warranty: The Preferred Series 7025 tubes carry a 6 month extended warranty.

Retubing a PRS Archon 25

by

Have a PRS Archon 25 combo which came loaded with JJ ECC83S in all six V positions. Amp was fairly dark and had to run both the clean and drive channels with the bright switches on to get enough top end. Was almost muddy in a way. Ordered three of the Preferred Series 7025's and a JAN 5851. 7025's went into V1, V4 (clean drive), and V5 (effects loop). The JAN 5851 went into V2 (first of two drive positions) to try and tame the enormous amount of gain this amp has.

The verdict? Turn the bright switches OFF!! The Preferred Series 7025's are off the charts when compared to the JJ's in this amp....lots of top end now, no bright switch needed or wanted, mids are solid and smooth, and the lows articulate and present. Muddy can't be used as a descriptive any longer. Was on the verge of returning the amp, but not now. The Preferred Series tubes have made a believer out of me and will not hesitate to purchase more in the future.

Disappointed

Am I missing something here? I own 4 Preferred Series 12AX7 tubes and I am not impressed with any of them. I've tried them in several different amps and in many different positions and they are just harsh-sounding to me, and at least 2 of these 4 were excessively noisy- to the point that they were unusable in V1, V2 or phase inverter positions. Given that these cost a bit more than many other new production tubes (e.g. JJ, EHX), I cannot justify the extra price on these. I really tried to make them work because the other Preferred Series tubes are EXCELLENT. I have had great success with their 6L6s, EL34s and EL84s (those as worth every penny).I cannot get behind these 12AX7s. I have to admit that I did NOT take this up with customer service and I didn't really know that avenue was available so that is on me for being lame. If you want to spend $20+ on a 12AX7, I'd go with TAD 7025 or the standard Tung-Sol 12AX7.

Smooth OD Tones

I have limited experience with tube brands, but this is a very nice tube. I've been replacing stock tubes with JJs for years, and I splurged on these for my Blackstar Artist 15. The overdrive is smoother and a little clearer. It's not a dramatic difference, but it's definitely there. Would buy these again.

Amazing!

Amazing! I bought a used Rogue Tempest II, recently. It came with KT88EH (ok), Sovtek 12ax7 (eh), and no name Chinese 6SN7GT. I was going to replace the smaller tubes first since they were the cheapest and worst, but I decided to go all out on the Black Friday sale. I got the TTS KT88s, TTS 12ax7s (7025), and Tungsol 6SN7GTBs.
I'm too old to spend the time and energy on A-B testing so I switched out all the tubes and fired it up. With nothing more than a warmup the sound difference was like an entire system upgrade. I've been around audio a long time (and I really do not like the general direction the industry has gone) and I was a professional classical musician for many years. I would not have though that much improvement could come from a moderately priced tube upgrade.
The sound is better in every aspect. And not by a little bit.
Detail vs warmth? Don't settle!
If the detail is not revealing better music, then what is it really doing?
