Electro-Harmonix 6CG7 / 6FQ7 | Real nice tube, smooth even response.

by

I picked these up for a Silvertone 1484. The first one had been at v3 for a while and it's held up well. Tonight I finally swapped the original Silvertone branded 6CG7 for the EHX at V4 so I've heard the difference in both. As the 3rd gain stage of the preamp it's held up really well. My 1484 fuzzes out early and this brings better, more even definition to breakup. Less crackly breakup. Telecaster sounds great through it and this was even with a Millard AT7 in the first gain V1. The other iirc is just reverb recovery, and again, though it's the OG crappy reverb tank, it's a bit smoother in what it's doing, if V3 failed I guess now I can always swap them and turn reverb off. Anyway, I like it, and I also tried the GE NOS in these positions. On this amp, the one I got was a bit too wide open in the harsher frequencies. It will work somewhere else, but I preferred the Ehx here.
