Blackstar HT-1 - Premium Package | Sounds good, gain is jumpy with pot movement, not so with others

The I got the amp used with ruby's, don't know how old but they were harsh. Plenty of distortion right away.
Tried Electro-Harmonix and JJ's and combinations.
Settled on the premium package. Gain is jumpy (spikes) but it sounds good for the whole range. Warmer tone, not as harsh as the JJ's, the Electro-Harmonix tubes came second.
