Totally Tweed! The preferred OEM tube of ’50s-era Fender Tweed Champ and Deluxe amplifiers. The Tungsol 6V6 vacuum tube has a geometry designed to safely handle the higher voltages used in guitar amps plus heavier plate and grid materials.

From our review of the Tung-Sol 6V6GT: "The Tung-Sol 6V6-GT is an outstanding tube and I feel it delivers a much smoother overdrive that you could describe as creamy instead of crunchy. The sound is better defined than the Electro Harmonix with less compression than EH or JJ."

Maybe not for the Deluxe Reverb

by

This is a follow up to my post 9 months ago. Everything stated in the first review as well as what is written in TheTubeStore review is dead on correct. In summary, they gave my Deluxe Reverb a more refined tone. Same sonic signature, but a bit smoother on the top end and better attack. Unfortunately, they died after 8 months. I purchased another set and 1 died after a month. I believe the plate voltage might be a bit too high. TheTubeStore was excellent with their help. No issues at all. I paid the difference and purchased a set of TAD tube, hoping they might handle the plate voltage better. Worth trying in your Deluxe? Absolutely. I liked them so much, I might just accept the fact that I replace the power tubes each year.

Good DRRI tube

by

Amp: Deluxe Reverb RI- Replaces: Original Groove Tubes- Typical playing style: Blues at volume 2-3.

The amp was dead quite with the Tung-Sol tubes. The amp retained its overall tone, but with less emphasis on initial impact or attack of the notes. To me, it sounded more musical and better balanced [overall]. There is substantial detail and I can hear, more clearly, the affect of splitting coils on humbuckers than I could with the GT tubes. Sweet spot for clean tones happens at 5 on the volume [Fat 50 single coil pickups]. Break up starts at 6 and sounds smooth, but falls apart at 9-10. At ten rather than sound "over-driven" it sounds over-modulated. Conversely, the GT were a bit more harsh, but was very usable at 10. I do not believe the amp is as loud with the TS tubes. Normal playing, for me, is 2-3. With the new tubes it seems more like 3-3.5. Overall, for my playing style and volume, the TS are a better fit than the GTs. Very musical, very nice sound. If you generally play in the 2-7 volumes, these are great. If you really push your DRRI, I would seek another tube IMHO.

Tung Sol 6V6 GT - Dr Z Remedy application

by

Nice warm tone, not too bright or edgy, and very quiet with no rattles or microphonics. Compared to my NOS JAN Philips tubes the breakup is quite early, but musical. If you are looking for easy natural crunch, a good choice.

Watch the voltages!

by

Loved the tone in my DR but blew a tube after a couple months of use. My amp tech had one blow as well. I was very impressed with the warmth of the tube but I suspect they don't handle plate voltages above spec very well.

Great tone, but....

Of the current production 6V6 tubes out there,
this is my favorite...However, I use a Swart AST
master, and Michael Swart has found that these
tubes can't handle the plate voltage of his amps
and they invariably red plate and crap out.
Regretfully, that has been my experience too,
so I am no longer using them with my Swart,
but I am using them with a stock 75 Princeton
Reverb. The Tung Sol 5881 is close in tone to
the Tung Sol 6V6GT, so that is what I'm using in
the Swart now.
