Nice 6550 for Marshall JCM, Bass amps, monoblocks, and AR hi fis
by Seth
If it takes a 6550 this is another great choice. I have tried these in the later Ampeg SVT with good resullts. I like the Tung Sol KT120 maybe a bit better, but this is another matter of personal taste. These are a very nice attempt at the original Tung Sol 6550 and fairly wel excecuted for look and sound. You get to avoid the headaches of locating 6 matched tubes by using these over NOS and you save a ton! They work well in the Fender 30-0 and 400 bass amps, Marshall JCM800s, mono blocks, PA, and fair well in the Audio Research amps. Again the KT120 is my personal choice, but this is still a very decent tube. Sound is among the best of the bunch. Winged C may have this trumped but not by much, and again personal tastes will dicatate choice. For some applications I love this, others the Winged C or KT88-120. It is right in among my favorites. The highs are not airy and whispy but smooth. They are not bright either. Mids are warm without being overly dark, and lows are very tight without being constipated and percussive. These test well on my Tektronix 576/371/570 curve tracers, and on any vintage tube testers I own. (Hickock 572,KS15750, and Triplett 3444, Weston type 9, & a B&K which give me GMohs, grid emissions, all voltages currents, etc. (well within spec)
