My Wife Accused Me of Buying a New Amp
First point of business has to be the speed of delivery and careful packaging done by thetubestore, awesome.
To the heart of the matter, I purchased a matched set of the TAD 6L6WGC-STR and 3 Tung-Sol 12AX7 tubes to replace the Fender factory Groove Tubes in a Hot Rod Deluxe III. I also purchased a matched set of TAD 6V6GT-STR and a single Tung-Sol 12AX7 to replace the factory tubes in a Fender Super Champ X2.
Both amps came alive. The change in tone was very pronounced, clear and clean chords, well balanced single notes. Highs are musically bright, not brittle and the lows are tight and defined. Add a little dirt and the tubes break-up with a slow bluesy crunch.
The tone difference was enough that my wife accused me of buying a new amp.
High Expectations to Disappointmet
I have purchased multiple matched pairs of the tubes based on reviews and write-ups. This is the second set purchased where one of the two tubes develops a rattle after an hour of play time. I'm hoping to get a replacement matched set or a refund.
Perfect for jcm 900 6l6 100 watt!
by Roy Cox
I have an older Marshall JCM900 5881/6L6 and these are recommended under the "premium package" the tube store always seems to recommend winners in their suggested packages and man were they right with these! The JCM900 is one of the most underrated amps in Marshall history. The biggest problem in my opinion is the factory tube choice used by Marshall for these. Way too much brittle high end and everyone was turned off by the JCM900. After replacing the stock tubes with these TAD 6L6GC it put that bottom end and clarity back in with the most creamy organic tone you could wish for! The only alteration I made to the premium package they recommend was substituting the EH 12ax7's with JJ ECC83S/12AX7 tubes. The EH 12AX7 tubes were a little too grainy for me compared. My JCM900 now out tones vintage Marshall JCM800 and others I have compared it against and I can't tell you how many people ask me what's under the hood. TAD 6L6GC-STR tubes are awesome!
Worked great in my Soldano SLO
Power tubes can change your amps tone! Looking for something to take the harshness out of the mids and highs these did the trick. Can't comment on how reliable they are yet, haven't burnt these in.
During the tweaking process of my Vibroverb clone, an Orange Drop 0.1uf coupling cap connecting the output section shorted, this caused an output tube to red plate and immediately a resistor on the tube socket burnt, followed a fuse. After testing everything out, found and replaced the dead parts, the amp came back to life and it sounds amazingly well, I was surprised these tubes took the beatings so well!
They sound fat and warm when cranked up, and when paired with the JBL E130, the right OT and the right circuit. The tone reminds me of SRV all the time.
Some customers blame these tubes for not delivering the same tone as their old RCAs in their Fenders, it is because these are much closer in construction to the Sylvania STR387s.
I won't hesitate to buy another pair of these 6L6GCs.
