From our review - "Blues guys will go crazy for the reissue Mullard EL84 vacuum tube. It has the least clean headroom and can be pushed into distortion with aggressive playing. When pushed into distortion the Mullard EL84 power tube has a softer, creamier overdrive that is more musical than other EL84 tubes and is the tube to pick if you want dirt."

The Mullard name and trademark have been acquired by the New Sensor Corporation. This new production Mullard EL84 tube is manufactured at their Xpo-Pul factory (also known as Reflektor) in Saratov, Russia. New Sensor is an American corporation and since taking ownership of this factory has been steadily improving the quality of current production tubes.

Note: These tubes have a slightly larger diameter than other EL84 tubes so they can not be installed into some '90's era Marshall DSL201 or DSL401 amplifiers, some '90's era reissue Vox AC15 amps, and Bad Cat amps.

The Goldilocks Zone for a VOX NT15H Finally Achieved

by -

I've gone down the rabbit hole with a Vox NT15H (v1), checking out just about every tube, every speaker that's easily accessible, and I finally feel as though I have this amp dialed in. (Contrary to what many might say, no matter what tubes or speaker used, it is very much like an AC15; and in its bright mode, it does wonderfully Voxish clean chime and top-boost crunch. In its thick mode, it also does a pretty good crunchy tweed-like thing -- with the wrong speaker, wrong tubes, it only gets about 75-85% of the way there, though -- with the wrong stuff, you can also achieve ice-pick highs and honky, cocked-wah-like mids, so I understand the mixed views on this amp). But with these Mullard EL84s, Mullard CV4004s and an Alnico Blue or Weber Bluedog, I've finally found this amp's right stuff. She's finally in the proper Goldilocks zone. (For those curious, JJ's EL84s and 803S large-plate preamp valves were very close, coming in second place for me.)

These won't fit Korg Marshall Factory Made AC15TB, AC15TBX or AC15TB2

by

I have a Korg AC15TBX and an AC15TB2 (made in the UK at the Marshall factory, it is NOT MADE IN CHINA) and I tried the new reissue Mullards but the problem is: THEY WON'T FIT the cutout in the chassis. They are too fat at the base of the tube. The only way to make them fit is to ream the metal chassis hole to the size of a US Coin (a Quarter 25cent piece).

Mesa Boogie .22+ Calber EL84 tube replacement

by

Ok, just impregnated my 80's Mesa with a matched pair of these tubes and currently awaiting that birth of great sound. Of course I'll have to wait about 20 hrs to hear the beautiful result I've read about. So far everything's is quiet, which is a great sign. This is a .22+ Head pulsing through a Mesa Thiele 12in 200 watt EVM, for me now using this for jazz is overkill. However in my days of R&B/ Funk, nothing could touch it, not even those, Fenders and Marshals across to my right...wonder why I was by myself with my flamethrowing 22 watts!
4.5 stars, until I hear that aural baby cry!

Vox AC4TV

by

Bought one of these for my VoxAC4TV and was hoping for a stunning tone and unfortunately I did not get what I was hoping for. From what I’ve read these are the tubes of choice for this amplifier. I currently have a JJ and prefer that tone as being tighter and not mushy like the Mullard. Maybe I got it bad tube. I tried them back-and-forth but in the end went back to the JJ. I wanted it to sound good but it just wasn’t the one. Always in search of the ultimate home.

If these are the 6BQ5, I have only one thing to say:

WOW!
