The Mullard name and trademark have been acquired by the New Sensor Corporation. This new production Mullard EL34 vacuum tube is manufactured at their Xpo-Pul factory (also known as Reflektor) in Saratov, Russia. New Sensor is an American corporation and since taking ownership of this factory has been steadily improving the quality of current production tubes.

Compared to the New Sensor Corp. Svetlana which has a rather strident midrange, the new Mullard EL34 has been considerably smoothed. The overall sound is more balanced and very warm. This is great news for people with something like a Marshall since they are inherently midrangey. The low mids are nicely balanced to prevent any boomy tone.

If you are curious about how these fare in a hifi stereo amplifier be sure to read the Wall of Sound EL34 tube comparison for details.

This new production EL34 tube is New Sensor's reissue of the famous Mullard EL34.

affordable tube with good sound

by

A decent tube and affordable, however lifespan seems iffy, had one go bad at 7 months. Otherwise decent sounding tubes, a bit lacking the dimensionality of real XF2 British Mullards. My XF2's are 60+ years old. Apparently no one has quite matched the originals!

Not as expected

Purchased this tube from the tube store approximately a year ago. The tubes arrived quickly and in perfect condition. I placed them in a Marshall JCM 800 50w amp, and biased around 35-36mA per tube. It biased up quickly and remained steady with virtually no drift in it's initial 8hrs of life. Tone is balanced with moderate power and headroom. Overall for me the tone was bland, nothing exciting to write about, just kind of boring in which from a 50w 2204 is rare. I then tried an SED Winged C tube and the difference was beyond stunning. Absolutely no comparison..the SED flat out destroyed it with a far richer, far more dynamic sound with unspeakable beautiful complexities in the mid frequencies. If you're looking for that famous Marshall crunch this is not the tube.

My choice el34

Nothing for me not to like. They are quiet operation and biased just fine in my prs hxda 30 head. Thetubestore does a great job on matching.
I've only used these in a marshall style amplifier and they are my go to for that. They sound wonderful pushed with a thick tone but controlled bass without exaggerated highs, smooth overall. Good sustain.
For guitar amps, it's a great choice.

Lackluster Performance.

I was disappointed in this tube. I honestly thought based on what I have read about it that it'd be a great product in my guitar amps. I use only Marshall 100 and 50w amps, not sure this has any bearing, but I tried it in both 800 series amps, and the newer JVM. Both times experimenting at differing bias points it just didn't deliver the goods. It was a good, stable tube that biased up quickly and remained steady at a specific bias point without drifting, however it just seemed to lack character. Boring is the most accurate, simple word I could use to describe it's performance. Other tubes in it's price range and cheaper just blow it away.

Marshall + Mullard = Melodious

I purchased a matched pair of these along with a matched and balanced quad set of Mullard CV4004/12AX7 tubes for my Marshall JCM602 combo, and after slightly adjusting the bias back to the referenced -42V I am very pleased. The clean channel sounds much better, i.e. the bass response is punchy and tight while the mids are well balanced, and the highs are sharp and crisp. In relation to Marshall VLVE-00010 (Svetlana EL34) or Marshall VLVE-00042 (Shu Guang EL34B), the overdrive channel does lose just a tad of that trademark Marshall tone to my ears, but overall I consider the tradeoff to be well worth it.
