Worthwhile Upgrade For Modwright LS 100

by -

It never fails to surprise me how good the LS 100 preamp sounds when it's rotated into my main hifi system. I didn't realize it can sound even better with the proper rectifier, and I've tried lots of them. The Preferred Series 5AR4 elevated just about every aspect of the LS 100's already superb sound. Strong, robust, even defined bass, full and smooth midrange, nice depth and width to the soundstage and spatial placement of instruments. I've had good luck with other Preferred Series tubes over the years in terms of reliability - let's hope this one gives good service life too.

Quiet enough for headphones!

This is a solid tube so far. I have some great NOS GZ34's, but with those becoming rare and expensive, it makes sense to find something from the current production lineup that will do the job. I purchased one of these for an Ampsandsound Bigger Ben amp that I primarily use for Headphones. I was using a JJ GZ34 since that's what came with the amp. It did the job and tone was great, but after just a few short months of use(it was not in use exclusively) it has become noisy. This is quite noticeable in headphones, particularly in sensitive 300 ohm headphones. In my quest to find a QUIET current production rectifier, I have found 2 winners. This one, of course, and the TAD Redbase that recently came out. I can't speak for longevity, but there are more positive reviews here than negative. I'll take it!!

Musical, modern, affordable rectifier.

I came here to order some JJ GZ34, the most elastic, relaxed of the current production GZ34/5ar4 tubes, fo some hifi amps. They were out of stock; "email to notify when in stock..."

So I tried these, based on Tubestore's reputation and my experience with their STR 274B and EL34 Chinese production tubes.

Well, this is a very fine sounding rectifier right out of the box. I got a new pair of custom-design KT150 single-ended-tetrode hifi amps and had some NOS Mullard GZ34s. Now those are usually great but in some amps they have an excessively tight-sphincter sound which can be choking, peaky and inauthentic in some circuits. I had a female vocals peaky screech with the vintage NOS Brits. But this tube levelled everything out; ameliorated the the dynamic constriction and delivered full bodied, authentic tone.

Good sound, but not well constructued

Even when they sound great, they last not for long (less than 1 year), and it ended blowing my fuses away

My first Preferred Series disappointment

by -

I am a big fan of everything I have purchased from the Tube Store but I have to admit this Preferred Series 5AR4 has been a real let down. I know tubes don't last forever, but this is my second purchase of this tube (I thought the first might have been a fluke) and neither one has lasted much past a year of casual weekend use in my Pilot 240 stereo amplifier.
Looks like I will need to find another alternative, one year of service is just not acceptable, sounds great but not for long!
