From our review of this EL84 vacuum tube: "With the JJ EL84 power tube you seem to get a compromise between tone and reliability. Nice mids, sparkling highs and solid bottom end characterize this tube. From a construction standpoint I think JJ has hit the mark. As with any EL84 tube they can be prone to mechanical noise in combo amps. However, they seem to take the heat and vibration in stride without any negative tonal effects. In the AC30 the JJ EL84 tube will really deliver the VOX chime with lots of swirl and shimmery harmonic content. In the little Pro Junior just crank it up and you get a great, nasty, overdriven sound."

These are the same tubes that Groove Tubes relabels as GT-EL84-S.

Taming Taz

by

Hi! My Carvin V3M arrived with a tone that was disappointing. First off, it's designed for modern rock and is very gainy and bright. I need a smooth 70's "brown sound" but it was a gift so I couldn't return it. It looked too cool to return anyway. All the tubes contributed to making the tone lackluster, so I completely retubed the amp, mostly with JJ's, after reading my way through thetubestore.com. The stock Sovtek EL84's went out to the curb with the others. Now it's a different amp. It still wants to have that Boogie Duel Recto "kaCHANG!* at 3K but I knocked that down with the EQ in my multi effects and it's perfect. I wouldn't know if the whole retubing worked or not if the power tubes weren't great. I'm getting a ton of harmonic complexity and very little noise. Taz and I are friends, now.

Mesa Express 5:25

Just put these in and the volume is much louder and articulate. Mentioned that I had an Express 5:25 in the order notes putting the matched bias in the hands of TheTubeStore and I guess they nailed it. Wow! Thanks.

Great Go-To EL84

I have lots of these floating around in my EL84 amps... they sound great, hold up well, and have been good quality. Gibson GA-5 reissue and Crate VC50 are sporting them now... Put them in Epiphone Electar in the past....
5 Stars for Value.....

Very nice, if a little inconsistent

by

I've gone through multiple sets of the JJs and have used them in my two primary amplifiers: a Vox AC30 and a Peavey Classic 50. The sound is simply magical in the AC30, with lush sparkling highs and nicely balanced lows. The Classic 50 benefits from the tubes as well, though not quite so much as in the AC30. The highs are there, but lows in the Classic 50 seem punchier and more ballsy when using the cheaper Sovtek tubes. What is peculiar is the variation from set to set I've experienced with the JJs. The first two I got were fantastic, but the third seemed weak comparatively. Still, I would definitely recommend using these tubes in an AC30, and I think they are a superb value considering the balance of price, performance and lifespan.

Solid choice

This has become my default upgrade for stock EL84s after using them in 4 or 5 amps; performs well with zero reliability or significant noise issues in all cases. To my ear, there is a bit of prominence to the high mids evident in some mid-high gain applications. Recent test confirms they sound basically the same as they did ten years ago.
