The Absolute Best - Cream of the Crop
It came time for us to upgrade/replace the tube in our Rode K2. We started researching 6922s and E88CCs. So many to choose from. We figured why not start with the best and work our way from there. We have had the same stock 6922 that came stock with our K2 for ten years. And for years we had suffered from nasty static/crackling, high noise floor and hissing. We had began to think it was due to the 7-pin cable gone bad. We replaced the cable and much to our disappointment most of the noise had not gone away. In addition we had considered buying a new large diaphragm tube condenser due to the K2's overly hyped top-end and excessive sibilance. But when we compared it to other large diaphragm condensers in our price range ($2000 and bellow) nothing seemed significantly better. So we decided for all these reasons to swap the tube. The night we swapped I have to admit I was extremely skeptical. After letting the mic warm up for a few minutes we started running tests. Right off the bat we notice the noise had completely disappeared! No crackling or static, a perfect signal. Next we set out to test it on vocals. We expected it to be different but whoa! Much more body in the vocal track, the highs seemed much sweeter and all the difficult sibilance was tamed. A vast improvement! We went back and shot out our results with mics that cost 3x and even 4x the cost of the K2 and it blew everything out of the water. Amazing! This is not hype, this tube is the real deal, the best.
