From our review of the JAN-GE 5751 vacuum tube: "While not really a 12AX7, it shares the same pin-out arrangement and is designed for less gain in favor of lower noise and microphonics. It worked well in both test amps and can be used to advantage if your amp has too much grind. One of these should calm things down a bit. The 5751 preamp tube is an affordable alternative to the 12AY7 used in original Fender tweed amps and can be subbed for a 12AT7 like a reverb driver tube. In this application, you will get good gain with a warmer sound than the 12AT7. The even balancing makes them a nice phase inverter and allows you push the front end of the amp a little harder."

Engl SE 670 EL34

by

After exhaustive forum research I resolved to purchase and try this tube in the PI slot after a recent lacklustre service (the tech replaced 2 worn stock engl/jj tubes with Electro-Harmonix, I don't think they are quite right for my amp)...made a noticeable difference but still wasn't quite right. I then subbed it into the gain driver slot and wowwww.....
The hedonistic saturation was reigned in to a much more articulate and focused yet raw growl without thinning the tone! The gain can be run much higher without sounding like a broken theremin recorded at a heavily clipped level and the hissy top end is completely smoothed. Absolutely love the lower mid punch shining through now on this amp and the right hand attacks on my 7 & 8 strings make me smile again. I am now searching thetubestore for replacements for the ehx tubes and a good quality long plate for the PI (and just a few to experiment with). I think after having done some research that this would be more conducive to the tone I am searching for. Great service, great turnaround from order processing to delivery (to Western Australia) and great packaging, thanks again! 4.5 stars because there is always room for improvement.

MARSHALL JVM 205H Phase Inverter

by

I had heard about the mixture of putting a Sovtek LPS in this position and thought I wouldn't notice that much of a difference... but, the JAN GE really smoothed out the gain channels on my amp. Brought back the crisp, gain attack that a Marshall is known for!!! Very happy and well worth the extra $$$.

Quiet, and more gain that you'd expect from a 5751.

More gain from the JAN-GE than from the JAN-Philips. These are really quiet and rugged. Make a nice V1 on a bratty Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. It stopped all the hissing and wierdness.

Phase Inverter

In my Tweaker 15 head as phase inverter, this amp probably needs a warmer tube but this tube is clear sounding and smooth.

DR.3D tone

I popped this baby in and got some really cool tones. Soft and sweet tone but clear too, all at the same time. It has a nice three dimensional tone as well.
