Pay a little more and pass on the JJ's for V1 and V2.

I recently bought a YCS50 that had been freshly retubed with JJ ECC83 S in all three positions. The clean channel was very sterile sounding. Clean but sterile. The lead channel sounded more like a ho hum solid state amp than a tube amp as well and the ECC83's brought out all the worst features of the Celestion V30. I was going to swap the speaker out for a vintage alnico but tried a pair of 1970's Mullards in V1 and V2 and the channels came alive. The clean channel now sounds very close to my 1977 YGM-3 and really brought out the versatility of this amp.
I am currently using a 1977 Siemens 12ax7 in V2 and that is also a marked improvement over the ECC83 S. Not worth the money you save using these tubes in V1 or V2, in my opinion.
Swapping out the JJ's also meant the V30 gets to stay in the amp, as the speaker's negative aspects have been tamed completely. I am looking forward to trying some of the new Mullard 12AX7's in this amp and my YGM-3 and YRM-1 SC.
